IABSE Task Group (TG) Spotlight of the month!
TG 3.1: Super-Long Span Bridge Aerodynamics (Click to watch)
Stoyan Stoyanoff, Vice Chair, from Bromont Québec, Canada speaks about his Task Group's projects and aims. If you or any of your colleagues wish to join these projects, discuss, or contribute to ongoing discussions with leading structural engineers worldwide, then write to us at bose@iabse.org and we will connect you to the respective TG. In Stoyan Stoyanoff's words, 'The main objective of TG 3.1 is to define generic problems that we hope would become benchmarks for all interested in long-span bridge aerodynamics. For example, anyone who would like to predict the response of a long-span bridge to strong winds, or its critical flutter speed, and would like to verify their approach, could solve the benchmark as defined by our Task Group and be able to get a sense right away if they are, or not, on the right track. It may also serve as the starting point of new theoretical and experimental studies'.
This Task Group stems from the initiative of prof. Giorgio Diana of Milano, Italy who saw a clear gap in our bridge aerodynamics practice. The first part of the work was presented at the IABSE Congress in New York City, in 2019 and was published in Structural Engineering International journal (Paper 1,Paper 2). The group is now focusing on developing more complete case studies to go to the next level where complex interaction between the dynamics of the structure and its aerodynamics need to be well captured. As expected, this step has been more challenging, where the group members still continue to submit their solutions. It is planned that these results will be presented at the IABSE Congress Ghent this September. Register for IABSE Ghent.
IABSE Webinar: Second Generation Eurocodes, 1 Oct. 2021 (Friday), 14-15.30 hrs (CET). Webinar details and Registration (Free): Click Here
This Webinar is being organised by the Finnish Group of IABSE, chaired by Dr. Risto Kiviluoma. The Eurocodes are European standards specifying how structural design should be conducted within the European Union (EU). Their development was started in 1990 by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) upon the request of the European Commission. Eurocodes were taken officially in use from 2006–2010 in each EU country. The second generation of the Eurocodes is currently under development by CEN/TC250 and is planned to be in use 2026–2028. In this webinar organised by the Finnish Group of IABSE, moderated by Dr. Risto Kiviluoma, with speakers: Prof. Steve Denton, and Dr. Mariapia Angelino from UK, you shall get the opportunity to watch and discuss live about the second generation Eurocodes with the contributors working on it. Registration is for free, spread the word and join IABSE in its mission for sharing knowledge worldwide.

Korean Highway Bridge Design Code
(Online Technical Course)
A two-day technical program on the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code (Limit State Design) was held online. The Korean Group of IABSE, chaired by Prof. Ho-Kyung Kim, prepared the technical program. Each lecture included answers to the questions that accumulated during the past 6 years since the application of the Limit State Design Method into practice, so that it was an opportunity to considerably resolve the questions of practitioners.

20 April 2021
The NG of IABSE represented in France by AFGC (Fench Association of Civil Engineering) has just awarded its Albert Caquot Prize which rewards an engineer for his entire career, in particular for his scientific and technical work and for his projects and achievements, but also for his moral qualities and his influence in the construction world. This prize was awarded to Claude BESSIERE of the INGEROP Company.

On 30 June 2021, the Bulgarian Group of IABSE along with the Turkish Group of IABSE are jointly organising a virutal Workshop based on the topic: "Bridge repair and maintenance". The National Symposium has become a tradition and a forum at a very high scientific and professional level. The organizer of the Symposium was the Depts. of steel, timber and plastic structures, University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Sofia, Bulgaria. Interesting scientific and technical reports were presented. Representing the Bulgarian Group of IABSE, Prof. Marina Traykova greeted the participants and welcomed them all. IABSE was also represented with a special poster in front of the hall of the venue. Read more here.

Competition to design the new IABSE Awards trophy!
With the new IABSE Awards being launched this year we need a new trophy, so we are asking IABSE members for design ideas. Selection and judging will be done by the Awards Committee and if they like your idea, they shall work with you to get it made, and it will become the IABSE Awards trophy for the foreseeable future.
The trophy must be easy to manufacture, durable and affordable, easy to hold in hands and stand on a surface. It should also include the words "IABSE Awards" and reflect something of the essence of engineering structures but not be recognisable as a particular structure.
Please submit your idea on no more than two A4 pages to awards@iabse.org to arrive before 1st September 2021.
French NG (AFGC) announces "Young AFGC Award 2021"
Bruno Godart, Chair French National Group (AFGC) announced that for the first time, the French NG and the Youth Commission of the AFGC have created with the support of the Association of Civil Engineering Universities (AUGC) a "Young AFGC Award 2021" competition. The objective is to promote the civil engineering profession amongst students, technicians, and engineers under the age of 35. Read more here.
